When is a good time?

My daughter just turned 9 in January. She is my first and only child for now. I am trying to figure out when a good time would be to start introducing her to talking about drugs and sex. I know there are lots of parents out there that have already had to do this and another thing, how do I approach the conversation litely? My husband and I are thinking about having another child and my daughter asked the infamous question, "mom, how can we get another baby?" I was in a state of shock for about 3 seconds, the best answer I could give her was, daddy and I would have to go see my doctor. I need help addressing this situation.

Fortunately kids often have no idea of the full implication of some of their questions! I am glad you took your three seconds of panic and formulated a nice safe generic answer that was not too mature for her. Some children mature faster than others and this first question may just be a warning shot over the bow of your parenting ship. Start preparing for that initial conversation by purchasing a simple children's book on the subject that has simple animated pictures to BRIEFLY introduce the topic. When is the right time is a matter of instinct so now that the first question has been presented to you and your spouse watch her like a hawk. You'll know when the right time presents itself. And when you decide it is the right time based upon a future question you turn the tables and ask her what she knows or her friends have told her about the topic. Use her response to determine how much depth you will use in your answer.
