I can't work

my kids are 4 and 6. the 6 year old is in kindergarten. The 4 year old is home with me. I have not worked for over 5 years simply because my husband and i can not afford day care. Now when the 4 year old goes to school I still cant work. Where we live we have no family and no friends. So when one of the kids get sick I will need to take off work. When the kids have some kind of school vacation. I will need to take off work. When it snows and there is no school. I will need to take off work. What do I do? Never work ever again until they get older? I have noone to watch the kids except me and we cant afford daycare. I would assume that a job is not gonna let you take all these days off of work cause of sick kids or snow days or school vacations. I want to get a job and bring some money into this family but I find it impossible. My husband is a truck driver who is gone for 5 days at a time then home for 2. I wont work on the weekends cause that is my time to spend with him. Anywayone else have this problem? Karen

Have you considered a part time job? This would give you the flexibility you're looking for in terms of hours. There are probably some jobs out there that would understand your issues and give you the flexibility. Depending on your skills, maybe you could be a school aid or some other job at your kids school (is they have the opening-or at another school in your district). Or maybe start your own business like in home daycare. I think if you are willing to take the days off when you need to with no pay until you get seniority or build up vacation/sick days, you can make it work. Do you have any neighbors or friends who would be willing to hep out in those rare times? I think you can find something that works, just need to be creative and think outside the box. But, if your family is doing ok and surviving with the way things are now I would consider staying at home. As a mother who has worked all her son's life, I am soooooo looking forward to becoming a stay at home Mom in another year. I think as our kids get older, this is when they need us at home even more than when they are younger. Whatever you chose to do just make sure its the right decision for your family and you.

Housecleaning can pay as much as $20/hour, and you can explain to your clients up front that you may sometimes have to skip or reschedule cleanings due to family needs. I would pay up to $15/trip for a grocery shopping service. Since you are available midday, a dog walking service might work - you'd need to figure out what to do when your kids are sick, though. There might be services you could supply to elderly people. I can imagine out-of-town children hiring you to stop by their parent's house to check on them, do a bit of housekeeping, run errands, etc. Good luck,

Apply for a job at the school, then you would have weekends and school holidays off.

Your not the only one.. hun. Since i had my son i have not worked either. To much for day care and nobody to watch him if something should happen. I give you big time brownie points for being the only parent home during the week too. Thats gotta be hard. I have been looking for work at home ideas for the last year but have not found one legit one. I would try the school as previously written. Hang in there and good luck.
