Promise Rings

I just have a quick question for any parent, my daughter's friends are getting promise rings and now her boyfriend wants to give her one. He's a super kid but I just wanted to know if anyone knows what they mean? She said that they mean no sex until marriage, if that's the truth then I'm all for it. I just wanted to know if anyone knew. She's a good kid but I want to make sure it doesn't mean anything else.

I checked wikipedia (I know, not always a perfect source) but it seems that promise ring has come to also refer to purity rings - which do mean no sex until marriage. I suppose that's probably regional with promise ring sounding less prudish than purity ring or chastity ring.
