So I am Irish and we gave DD an Irish name. We now know we are having another girl and I love the name Kyra, but it means "the dark one". DD was named using DH's first initial and I would love to name the new baby with my first initial, but is it terrible to use that name when she will be half African American? I am really torn b/c I don't want her name to be a joke, but I want it to start with a "K" and be Irish and I absolutely love the name Kyra.

Hmmm.... That is tough. I am not sure what I would do. It is probably not something most people would pay attention to and you could be sure she knows you just liked the name. Though you should think about how she might feel being labeled that if she does end up having darker skin than your other DD who is so light. Good luck!

I dont necessarily have a vote, because I cannot tell you whether people will look it up or not. I mean, for example you never know, your daughter may look it up one day, i know i have looked up the meaning of my name. There are several irish names that start with the letter K (i am irish myself), now the harder to find names will be Gaelic names that start with a K. so, are you looking for actual Irish or Gaelic names?
Honestly, i never knew Kyra meant 'the dark one,' but when i first read this, i was just overviewing it, not reading the whole thing, and when i thought about the dark one, i wasn't thinking dark as in skin-color, i was more thinking along the lines of light and dark, good and evil.. type thing.
Anyway, ultimately you are the one who will decide her name. But again, there are several K irish names.. here are a few, not trying to persuade you, but just thinking of a few off the top of my head (i was looking into K names before i knew what i was having w/ my last baby, lol)... Kacie, Katelyn, Keely, Kenna, Kelly, Kennedy, Kerrin, Kerry, Kevina, Kiely... im sure there are many more than that, but those were some that i could think of.. again, this truly is your choice

Sorry this is such a late response. I would go ahead and use the name for two reasons. First, your DD probably isn't going to really care what the meaning of her name is. I don't know many people who do (and, in fact, I just looked up Kyra on a couple of websites, and most of them listed the meaning as "ruler"). Second, if the name means "dark one" and she is dark complected, I think it actually seems like a nice thing and not a negative. Remember, there's nothing wrong or embarrassing about being dark - it's beautiful!

I probably would not use the name. My thoughts were kind of the same as Heather's. No nothing is wrong with being darker skinned, but what if one day she is made to feel that way, and here her name means "The dark one"? I would probably just want to avoid it. That's jmho though.
