Hair Problems

DD's hair is what I like to call a half-fro. Her hair is curly and super coarse in the back, but soft in the front. I pull it up in pony tails and it used to stay for about 2 days before it needed to be re-done, but now the small plastic hair bands keep breaking! I use the just for me conditioning detangler and the oil lotion moisturizer. I have tried making the bands looser and tighter, but they still break every day! Should I be using different hair band? The rubber bands get stuck in her hair and I have to cut them out, but is that what I should be using? Any advice would be appreciated.

Can you try anything other than rubber bands? What about elastic ones? Ooooh, or those hair bands with the two balls on each end? You know the ones? Also, hair barrettes are cute!
