Friendly Places to Live

DH and I are going to be moving in August, but we don't know where yet. DH has learned that he will not have his job next year, so we are in the process of looking elsewhere. We are hoping to move to somewhere in WA state (we have family there) and are considering Spokane, WA. I know this is a very regional specific question, but does anyone know if that is an accepting place to live? I realize it is very close to Idaho, and I have heard there are areas in ID that can get pretty nasty.

I am curious what you all have heard/experienced in regards to cities and states that are better or worse to live in for mixed couples.

We lived in Washington when I was younger, but on the military base in Ft. Lewis and it seems like all military kids are mixed, lol, so it was no big for me and my sister.

My sister used to live in Fayetteville, NC near FOrt Bragg and there were tons of mixed kids there. My sister used to say that with the kids that were part black- you could generally tell which parent was black based upon the way the little girls hair was combed. If the mother was black, the hair tended to be braided or straightened and neat looking and if the mother was not the black parent, the hair would be natural and loose.

I have the opposite problem. My hair has always been considered 'good', which drives me crazy because although I don't need to relax it, the frizzy, tangled mess that it becomes when there is any humidity in the air- is not good to me- I grew up in DC - it's built on a swamp- so there was tons of humidity. Even when I relaxed my hair, it was frizzy.

But when you combine my hair with DH's straight formally blond, now light brown hair, my daugther's hair is so fine that I have a hard time fixing it. She has a lot of hair for her age (15 months), but I still find it is way too thin, soft and lacking in texture to braid properly- my sister managed to do it once, but she pulls really tight- something DD allows auntie and her daycre teachers to do, but not mommy!

I'm white and married to a black man. It's true what you say about the hair..when I was pregnant I prayed to have a boy only because I am so clueless about hair. My own hair is very curly and half the time I look like some kind of wild woman--I can't even imagine what a little girl of ours hair would have looked like! Maybe my sister in law would have taken pity on me and braided it for me!

LOL 121sweetie...I've prayed that same prayer (not just for the hair but also because I'm pretty no-frills and I'm sure I'll end up with a girly-girl)
