Earlier this evening my dog started shaking her head as if something was "tickling" her ears. Then is progessed to shaking more violent shaking and then to scratching. I thought maybe a bath would help but that in turn made it worse. Now her one ear is warm to the touch. I know I probably need to take her to the vet however it's 2am on Sunday. I feel so bad for the poor dog. I am not getting any sleep because she can't stay still and keeps coming to me for comfort. Is there any sort of home treatment that would help soothe?

AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
Katherine Scott, DVM, DACVIM responded:
Unfortunately, treatment depends on what is causing the "tickle". If it's something like an ear infection, your vet will be able to prescribe medications to get rid of the infection. It might also be that she got something down inside of her ear, has allergies that are making her itchy, or could even have a neurological problem that is making her shake. She really needs to see a vet to see whta's going on before we can know what might help her be more comfortable.

Many vets will see their regular patients over the weekend if they think it's an emergency, so it's probably worth a call to your usual veterinarian. Otherwise, I'd look for an emergency clinic in your area if you think your girl is too uncomfortable to wait another day.

Good luck!
