Is it safe to give my 16-year-old pug glucosamine?

As long as it is a high quality version of glucosamine, it should not be a problem in a healthy pet. It should not be given to pets with diabetes as it could cause complications however. Supplements are not regulated like medications are and some are not as truthful as they could be. The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) has some standards and some supplements are evaluated by them and given a seal of approval which should be on the bottle.

My personal favorite form of glucosamine supplement is manufactured by Vetri-Science and is called Glyco-Flex. It comes in a flavored tablet or a liver flavored soft chew and can be purchased through most veterinarians or online without a prescription. They are a bit more expensive but come with added satisfaction in that it is formulated for pets in flavors most enjoy. It can also be purchased depending on how much support your pug needs (anything from mild arthritis [Glyco-Flex I> to severe problems [Glyco-Flex III>). Here's a product sheet for it: http://www.vetriscience.com/sellsheets/Glyco%20Flex%20Stages.pdf
