My dog has what I call anxiety attacks

I have a 2 & a half year old Chihuahua mix. She has had these "attacks" ever since I got her from a friend who had to move. It used to happen when I'd come home from work at night & I thought she was just excited to see me. About 4 months ago we relocated from Tennessee to Florida. She did fine on the move & her attacks have become less. We live with my mom & she has a male Corgi mix & the 2 dogs get along great! My dog is rarely alone anymore but now she has her "attacks" at night. She sleeps with me in my bed, right next to me. She will be in a dead sleep & then all of a sudden starts having an attack. It sounds like shes coughing & trying to catch her breath. It always wakes me up, so I hold her close to me & soothe her & kind of pat her back. Eventually they go away. I've heard I can try Benadryl but I'm not sure how much to give her or what she's even going through. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My female Chihuahua did that. My vet explained that Chi's have a weak trachea and sometimes it collapses a bit and affects their breathing. It is fairly common in this breed. It is kind of alarming when it happens and it does sound like they are "choking," especially if they get to running around or excited, or accidentally held too tight, or too hot or too cold, etc. LOL. Delicate little guys but very sweet, loyal and lots of fun One night I did notice that when she was doing her coughing/hacking/sniffling thing was that her little nose was running. I took her to the vet and he prescribed a daily allergy pill (not Benadryl). It did help a bit but still once in a while she did her noise-making because of her weak trachea. Urging her to get a drink of water and calm down and patting her (like you are doing now) is also very good.

How do you know these are anxiety attacks? Maybe she suffers from a collapsed trachea. My dog usually starts coughing and has breathing problems when he is sleeping or relaxing, espcially when first waking up in the a.m. He always hacks and coughs. With a x-ray it was confirmed that he sufferes from this condition. Unless it gets to be really bad than there is the option of surgery. Just a thought.
