Female cat struggling to urinate and poop

We just got back after being gone a few days(we had cat sitters) to find our newest little girl struggling to use the box. She goes back and forth constantly but does not appear to be in any pain. She's not crying out when trying or when we felt her belly and bladder area. I have not seen her drink in the last 8 hours but she ate some wet food and then went straight for the box. She's purring and snuggling and doesn't appear to be in any discomfort. I'm calling the vet tomorrow but I was hoping there was something to soothe her now.

AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
Drew Weigner, DVM, ABVP responded:
While she could be constipated, what you're describing could also be a urinary tract disease which is more common. Your veterinarian can easily tell during an examination and may run a urinalysis to make sure.
