Is liquid whey OK for kittens?

I make my own yogurt from skim milk and always have leftover liquid whey. I've heard some owners say that they give this to their pets instead of water. Is this ok for a kitten? I'll be bringing 2 home in a month.

AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
Drew Weigner, DVM, ABVP responded:
No. Cow's milk contains lactose, which many cats are intolerant to. It also doesn't supply the nutrients needed for a kitten to grow properly. Stick with high quality canned diets specifically made for kittens. Your veterinarian can tell you exactly what to use, once they've been examined.
