Any need for an e-cone if my dog keeps licking the surgical site after stitches are removed?

Hi! I got a dog from a local rescue last Friday, and he was neutered on 10/12. When I got him, his stitches were already removed, but the area around the surgery site still appeared somewhat red. For the past few days, the little guy has been licking the location pretty frequently. I've been stopping him as much as I can, but my question is- Given that the stitches already came out, should I be getting an e-collar to stop him from licking the site, or is a little licking going to be okay for him? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Nobody else has answered so I'll take a shot at it. If the areas isn't being injured by the licking, like there isn't more swelling or bleeding, then it may not be a concern. A lot depends on the severity. Some dogs just won't leave themselves alone. Of course, he's probably all better now, and I wish you many years of happiness with your new pal. Thanks for adopting!
