My 15 year old cat just diagnosed with CRF
An_248901 posted:
My 15 year old cat was just diagnosed wiht CRF in the early stages. He will not eat Hills KD, so now I have him on MediCal Renal LP and Urinary SO in the dry. Is this good for him or should I be trying him on another food? I have put water dishes on every level of the house so he is being kept hydrated.

Is there anything else I should be doing to keep him healthy?

Drew Weigner, DVM, ABVP responded:
Actually, it sounds like you're doing very well. The LP diet is for cats with kidney disease, so that's an excellent diet for him. The S/O diet, however, is for cats with urinary tract stones (sometimes called "crystals") so ask your veterinarian which dry food to feed him. Finally, he also needs to have his blood pressure checked as many cats with kidney disease have hypertension. This can damage his kidneys but also can cause many other serious problems, such as blindness.
