Kitten stool gone soft
Smudgie posted:

We have had Smudge since he was about 2 months old. He's 4 months old now. He was on a diet of Fancy Feast Gourmet wet kitten food and Purina Kitten Chow. We heard from our vet that it wasn't the best, so we switched him to Nature's Menu kitten pouches. We did not switch him gradually over a few days. It was more like over 3 meals or so. And we also changed the dry food to Royal Canin Kitten Persian 32. This was about 2 weeks ago. Since then, his stool has gone a little soft and he gets it on his hair. We need to clean him after every trip to the litter box. Could the sudden change in his diet be the cause of this? He also seems to eat a lot of the wet food now. We feed him between 2-3 pouches a day (each pouch is 100g) Should we be worried about him over-eating? Will the stool get firmer over some time? Thanks for the help.
Drew Weigner, DVM, ABVP responded:
Yes, a diet change can cause soft stool in cats. So can many other things, such as parasites, bacterial overgrowth, underlying diseases, etc. If you've not done so already, take him to your veterinarian to find the cause. The first thing to look at are stool tests, which your veterinarian can likely do in the office while you wait. While he's growing, it's unlikely he'll overeat, but ask your veterinarian for advice.
