What is the best way to train your cat with a scratching post. My mom has two bengals who are older and they are ruining her couches. We have a large condo for the cats as well as a scratching post. We are trying not to have them declawed.

I've tried putting catnip spray on the scracthing post, and some distatsteful covering on the places they shouldn't scratch, like plastic or bubble wrap or something.

There are little glue on claw tips you can get, "soft paws" or some such, that can help protect your furniture. I'm glad you are trying not to have them declawed, having their toe-tips removed can be very traumatic for a cat, not to mention dangerous if they manage to get outside.
