Diagnosis to Remove Front Teeth on My Yorkie Mix

In October, 2012, I got a rescue dog (rescued from Missouri). He's a great dog. They figure he's approximately 3 years old. He has some major issues with his front teeth. The front top and bottom are completely broken down. They don't seem to bother him although I've had a vet indicating that I should get them removed. What are your thoughts on this? I do worry about gum disease and any other disease they may become a result of this. However, I'm not sure I want to put him through getting his front teeth removed.

My profile pic is a picture of his teeth. This was the only way I could upload what they really look like.
