Sick Belgian Sheepdog Mix...HELP
avatar
stormy14 posted:
5 year old Belgian Sheepdog has multiple symptoms. He periodically shakes his head, lifts his paw up higher then need be to walk, as though his depth perception is off. Sometimes has problems with his hind legs. This has been going on for a few months. The only thing that has been different is he had an ear infection in June. The vet said he had to pop something and I'm afraid that had something to do with it. A new vet thinks it might be a tumor in the brain but to get an MRI to find out I have to travel a good distance and expensive. She put him on Prednisone 30 mg every other day. He has also been on two different antibiotics. If anyone has any ideas what I could try or do I would appreciate the help.

Sandy Willis, DVM, DACVIM responded:
Hi there,
Well, your new vet could be right that this is a brain problem. The cerebellum in the brain deals with depth perception, but there can be middle to inner ear problems that can cause brain type syndromes. Does the ear seem to be a problem still? Sounds like she is treating for inflammation and infection which is a reasonable approach but if it does not work, a referral to a veterinary neurologist might be helpful. Sounds like your veterinarian is thinking about this. But prior to doing that expensive MRI, a neurologist is trained to do a neurologic physical examination during the office call, which can help them tell you what and where they think the problem is. Sounds like you live aways away from specialists, but that initial consultation could help you and your veterinarian narrow down the problem and treat, if even symtomatically, appropriately. Dr. Sandy
