No heartbeat between 6-7 weeks

Hi,
If you go by my last period I should be 7.5 weeks preg. but if you go by when I think I conceived (the wk of 6/15) I'm only around 5.5 weeks. Went to the OB 2 weeks ago and we saw a gestational sac and a really healthy (according to the Dr.) yolk sac. No fetal pole, no heartbeat. Told me I was very early into my 6th week...sent me for another round of bloodwork. My HCG went from 2,000 to 8,000 in two weeks but my progesterone dropped from 17 to 10.7 in two wks. Put me on Progesterone suppositories hoping it was just that my body wasn't producing enough. Went back to OB this past Friday...a week later from last time. Had 2nd transvaginal...this time we saw the fetal pole and it measure 6.2wks when according to last period I should be 7.5 wks. Still no heartbeat...Dr. said she wasn't pleased with what she saw esp. that my progesterone had dropped and things didn't look good. I think it is too early...she said we'd give it another week, do another u/s and then talk about D&C. I don't think I am 7.5 weeks I think I am much earlier and that may be why there is no heartbeat (maybe I'm just in denial and holding out hope). Is there any hope that this pregancy will be ok. No bleeding, breasts are still very sore, very gassy, hunger has increased but not ravinous, tired but not exhausted. I'm driving myself crazy over here...if someone can please help! Thanks...JP

okay i know someone who went through the same thing and got a d&c...give it time see if the baby grows it could be u ovulated a little late and still got pregnant....every female is different. sometimes u can hear the heartbeat right away other times it will take awhile...my cousin did not hear her babies till she was 10 weeks. so i say if it feels off to you then i would wait a little while or get a second opinion. just to make urself feel better. good luck

Also keep in mind that pregnancy is calculated from last menstrual period, not ovulation. But if you did ovulate later in your cycle, your baby would be measuring small. And I would agree with the second opinion if the doc recommend d&c and you aren't comfortable with that.

Hi Destiny827,

There are two possibilities here:

1) you ovulated late, and your pregnancy is earlier than the LMP suggests.
2) the pregnancy is miscarrying.

I'm afraid the falling progesterone is not a good sign and, like your doctor, I fear that you will miscarry. I'm very sorry Destiny.

Miscarriage is unfortunately common, and usually (60%) due to a chromosomal problem that occurred at fertilisation. That is, a pregnancy may be destined to miscarry from the outset, and is NOT associate with anything you have done or not done. Chromosomal problems usually cause abnormally small embryonic growth, which may manifest as a smaller-than-expected fetal pole on ultrasound.

BUT - unless you are bleeding severely, there is NO reason to have a D&C until you, YOURSELF, are 100% convinced that the diagnosis is correct. There is no physiological harm in waiting another week (or two) for a repeat ultrasound, and you do not want to have to live with the thought "what if I waited a little longer".

Further hCG tests are probably of little value now that the pregnancy is known to be in your womb. A "non-progressive" ultrasound (i.e. no change over a week or two) would be 100% consistent with miscarriage, as normal embryonic growth is rapid and obvious at this early stage.

Sometimes, because of experience, doctors arrive at "100% certainty" before our patients. But a good doctor will not try to convince you to do something you are not ready for, and if you explain your concern, I'm sure your doctor will be happy to wait for another scan, even if it is just "holding out hope". If not, I agree, get another opinion.

Miscarriage (possible or real) is a very distressing time, and YOUR needs are paramount at this time.

There's nothing wrong with hope. I wish you all the best Destiny.

I am going threw almost the same thing the only difference is i am bleeding but the sac and everything is growing i am in between 6 and 7 weeks to they only finally say the pole 4 days ago but still dont see the heart beat they told me they are only going to give it 4 more days if they dont see a heart beat by then they are gonna call it a misscarage, I am like you I think i am only holding out hope but i dont understand how the sac and everything keeps growing if i am having a miscarage just like you i am very confused on where to go from here other women have told me they have had full blown bleeding and still carried full term, I am going to keep holding out hope that they will see a heart beat on my next ultra sound
