hello. i have asthma since i was a kid... i did not know i was pregnant so during my 2nd or 3rd week of pregnacy i was using salbutamol inhaler 6-8 times a day bec i cant breathe i am 10 weeks pregnant ryt nw, and im worried ive been using my salbutamol inhaler. will there be risk of birth defects? im worried... ultrasound will be in 3 weeks as per ob

According to my OB she said that it is better to use a rescue inhalor if you need it then not use it and have worse things happen. I have asthma as well and I have had a few respiratory illness which makes it very hard to deal with breathing because the asthma kicks in. She even gave me a refill of the albuterol inhalor just in case. When I look up the Salbutamol it pulls up the albuterol name and information so I am thinking it is the same way.This is some of the information I pulled from our clinical pharmacology site at work.


Pregnancy
Albuterol is classified as a pregnancy risk category C drug. Beta-agonists can interfere with uterine contractility as a result of its beta-adrenergic-mediated relaxant effects on smooth muscle (oral > inhalation). Despite this precaution, the 2004 guidelines of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) Asthma and Pregnancy Working Group include short-acting inhaled beta2-agonists as first line therapy for mild intermittent asthma during pregnancy, if treatment is required. Albuterol is preferred over other short-acting beta2-agonists due to extensive safety-related information during pregnancy. However, there is no evidence of fetal injury with the use of other short-acting inhaled beta2-agonists, and maintaining a previously established treatment regimen may be more beneficial to the patient.

tnx so much... but i feel sad at 12 weeks i was diagnosed to have a blighted ovuum, no heartbeat no fetus... still positive on pregnancy test, no cramping no bleeding...

I have asthma as well and i've been told that there are more risks for the baby if you don't keep your asthma controlled. If you can't breathe, neither can the baby. So it is better to use your inhaler than not to use it.

I am sorry for your loss. As the others have stated, it is more important to control your asthma than anything else. You must be healthy in order to conceive.

There are other medications which have similar pregnancy profiles. I would talk with your physician further about this.
