Possible gallbladder issues

I'm 22 weeks and I've had constant discomfort in the middle of my upper abdomen and just under the right side of my ribs for a month now. It's usually discomfort but sometimes it is pretty painful. I've also had some other digestion type issues that occurred when these symptoms started - very loose BMs and more gas. On 4 occasions I've had all over stomach pain that was quite severe and each time these "attacks" happened after eating salads/raw vegetables. And I should mention that in the past I was diagnosed with irritable bowel and suffered with constipation for years. But that all seemed to clear up after my first son was born two and 1/2 years ago.

When I told my ob about it she said it was heartburn and said to take Zantac. I've been doing that (even though it doesn't feel anything like heartburn to me) and it's not helping. It's becoming quite a problem since I never know from hour to hour how bad the pain is going to be. From what I've researched it seems like gallbladder symptoms but it doesn't seem worse after fatty/spicy foods. However, the pain is always worse in the evenings when I eat bigger meals.

I just saw my dr. Tuesday when she said it was heartburn but I'm not sure when I should go back to her. It's not going away and I'm getting really tired of feeling this way. I'm finally over the nausea and first trimester issues and now this is getting me down. It's like I can't just enjoy being pregnant for even a moment without some kind of pain or problem! Anyone else had similar symptoms (while pregnant or not)?

Hi Anon and Welcome -

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Please be persistant with your OBGYN if you are still having symptoms and the Zantac is not helping.

You may also want to contact your gastroenterologist to have your symptoms checked out.

Keep us posted on how you are doing,
Elizabeth

I agree with the web MD staff member. If the pain is not improved with the Zantac, you need to go back to the doctor. It is easy to assess the gallbladder for issues. an ultrasound is very easy to do. You do need to be fasting when it is done as this gives the best results. I would not go into the doctor fasting as it may take some time to get it done.

I would avoid foods that make the symptoms worse. You are right, fatty foods usually make the symptoms worse. Usually green leafy vegetables don't do that.

So, maybe it is not gallbladder issues but something else. Since you have a GI doctor, you may wish to see them as well.

I hope the symptoms improve. You are correct, it does bring you down when you don't feel well. If you don't feel well, talk with your doctor.
