I am 11 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I am active duty army stationed in Korea. The area I am currently assigned to has no ob/gyn. I've been seen for a pap smear by an amry doctor and was told I have bacterial vaginosis. I was prscribed flagyl. I'm not familiar with this condition or medication; my research online says this medication is not safe in the first trimester... however the infection is dangerous as well... it's virtually impossible to seek a second opinion here so anyone in the medical community PLEASE share and advice!

I had the same diagnosis during my first appt with my first son. I can't remember the name of the medication I was prescribed (I honestly did not even look it up) but I did take the medication given my son was perfectly fine. I hope someone can give you expert advice and answers. Best wishes!

First of all, thank you for all you do for our country. Your sacrifice for all of us back home is more than you can imagine. Thank you.

Now, you have a very common "infection". I would suggest you take the Flagyl after you are done the first trimester (this is around the 12th week as all of the organs of the baby have formed).

It hopefully will clear it up. The controversary regarding this medication is some believe if taken in the late 2nd/early 3rd trimester may in fact increase the risk of prematurity.

This is why I recommend taking it early in the second trimester.

I wish you all the best. God speed.
