Pregnancy with PCOS!!!

MichaelaAnn posted:
I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 14. I've been on and off birth control since then. I recently had the depo shot, and I absolutely hated it. I didn't go back for the second shot, thinking I couldn't get pregnant because I've been told over and over I couldn't. But suprisingly, I am after being off the depo for 3 weeks! But I'm super, super worried about the complications that come along with the pcos though. Any help?

Robert O Atlas, MD responded:
So, PCOS is not really the issue but some of the things associated with PCOS. Many women who have PCOS are overweight or obese, so that in itself is a real risk factor for pregnancy complications.

Other issues for patients with PCOS is the hyperglycemia (high blood sugars) that can be seen. Over a quarter of patients will become diabetic.

We see many patients who have PCOS and most women do quite well without any problems. Having said that, you need to be followed very carefully during the pregnancy.
I would recommend an early glucola to see if you have diabetes.

Congratulations on the pregnancy. The best news you ever got was being told you could not have children. In medicine there is never always and never never.
