Can an OB refuse to treat and see you if you have a balance? I just took a positive pregnancy test today, but have a $300 balance with my OB. I only have it because they never informed me that an ultrasound I had for other things was not covered by my insurance, and my insurance company would not tell me either way, said that I needed to talk to my OB office about it. Would love to stay with the office, but can not afford to pay that right out of pocket. They will not see me until it is paid off.

I am a medical billing supervisor for a large group practice. And unfortunately Yes they can refuse treatment for large balances. You may want to try a city hospital,. Private practices are under no obligation to treat patients no matter their conditionid there is an outstanding balance. And can refer you to a collection agency if balance is not paid with in a loted time. I usually offer patients the option of a payment plan and the option to see the MD as long as the payment plan is being honored. The patient is responsible for coverage details. Many services are not known to be covered or not covered until after the billing goes out, and an explanation of benefits comes back from the insurance company. You should try that option if you want to see this MD. Note Physicians do not do their own billing and offices have guidelines that must be followed to Have a successful practice... Best of luck!
