I just found out i'm about 6 weeks pregnant with my second child. My son is 11 months and i gained about 50 ibs with him. I was only able to loose about 30 of that and i'm scared to gain that again. DO you have any tips on how to maintain weight wiht a nutrition plan, claorie target, or how to lose a little bit of weigth safely so that its healthier for the baby and myself.? I just can't let myself be 250! I'm 5'8" and 195 i have a large bone structure and muscle mass on my legs.

I know where you're coming from. I was afraid of gaining more this time around. With my first I gained 30 lbs. I know that is within the target for people of a normal weight, but I still worried that it might be more this time.

I think a lot of women get stuck on the idea of "eating for 2" when that is not the case at all. You only need an additional 300 calories per day, if you are eating healthy already.

The best thing you can do is watch what you eat. Eat a good breakfast, have a healthy snack in between, eat a good lunch, etc, and drink plenty of water.

For my lunch, I'll pack 2 or 3 little snacks in case I have the urge to munch. Like carrot sticks, celery with a tablespoon of peanut butter, yogurt, etc. And if I've recently eaten and feel the urge to mindlessly snack on something, I will chew a piece of gum.

And exercise! I walk daily while at work and exercise once I get home with light weights. I have a 3 yr old and he likes to imitate me when I exercise, so it makes things a little more fun in the evening. Sometimes he wants to go ride his bike, so we'll walk around the block a couple times as well.

I know it's difficult, especially when you are feeling so tired, sick and run down all the time, but for me, when I moved into the 2nd trimester and only felt tired most of the time, lol, the more I was active and got the endorphins pumping, the better I felt.

I am now 28 weeks and holding steady at a 15 lb weight gain. I realize that everyone is different and what works for me may not work for you, but you'll never know unless you try, right?

You have to be disciplined. That means eating healthy. No chips, regular soda, ice cream. The two things I tell my patients to avoid are juices (any kind) as well as regular soda.

So, the good news is your BMI is 29.8, so you are not obese. I would suggest you gain on the lower side of normal, 25 pounds this pregnancy.

You can do it. Talk with your healthcare provider about maybe seeing a nutritionist now.

thanks for the support! i'll def give those thinsg a try. My last pregnancy i worked out 4 -5 times a week biking, ellipticalling, running then progressed to a walk. but i just kept gaining weight. I know i have to be careful with my eating so i like your snak idea. thanks so much for the advice

Hello and Congratulations!

First-remember that you are growing a Human Being! This requires fuel; now is NOT the time to think about losing weight, rather maintaining a very healthy intake of foods. I stress the concept of what this is: when the body is required to not only sustain you, but is also responsible for developing another person- you must provide the fuel.

Ask your OB/Midwife for a referral to see a nutritionist that specializes in prenatal nutrition. You might also check out Weight Watchers, as they have a pregnancy program - they are notorious for helping people establish a lifestyle of healthy eating behavior.

Keep in mind that as a Mom, you will be modeling for your child how to approach food; an appreciation for good/healthy food is a gift to our children.
