Naming your child
WandlingSarah posted:
Always think before you name your child. This is a huge decision and will be with them for the rest of their lives. You can't always think "oh that will be so cute" or "their nickname could be____", you have to think about their future. You need to think about a couple of things; are they going to have trouble spelling their name when they go to school, will they (or you) have the constant question of "is that a boy or a girl", or would you think of voting for President Fluffy. I am not trying to sound judgemental but just want people to stop and think before naming your little bundle of joy.

I agree. I feel sorry for my nephew. His name is Aodan (pronounced Aiden). I know he's gonna have people mispronouncing his name all through life.

Even semi-normal names can be mispronounced. A boy in my class in grade school was named Jaime (pronounced Haime; James in Spanish) and was always called Jamie on the first day of school. The entire class would correct the teacher.

I totally agree!

I completely agree, one of my friends just named her daughter Genevieve. It's a lovely name, but the poor girl is never going to be able to spell it.

Actually in kindergarten, my best friend was Genevieve and I loved writing it. Maybe i was smart and able to spell early!

But I do agree. There are some unfortunate names out there. I think there is a line between something that you just don't like, and something that is really inappropriate. I can understand some people want to spell it so it's not the typical spelling but some go too far. SOme ive come across are:

Le-ah (pronounced Le-dash-ah)
(these last 2 were twins also...)

I agree about Genevieve. Sounds like a normal and easy name to me. You're kidding about Le-ah though, right? Poor baby.

She's probably not kidding. I have seen some really strange name choices by folks trying to find something unique. And this is from normal people, not just celebrities (Moxie Crimefighter, anyone?)

My brother went to school with a boy named Stormy. His brother had a "normal" name (Daniel).
