OK, so I will be ten weeks this weekend, I am super excited for my embryo to reach fetus status. However, I also find myself becoming more and more deeply paranoid. This is my first pregnancy so I find myself doing a lot of research about pregnancy, but I'm starting to wonder if I should just turn off my internet. There is SOOOOO much scary stuff I'm learning about. I wish I could fast forward to the day I can hold my baby in my arms!!! Especially with being in the first trimester, I'm finding myself in almost a constant panic with all the miscarriage information I have read and how it's most common in the first trimester. Then just recently, I learned what a silent or missed miscarriage is. OMG!!!! Apparently, some women (although this is rare) can experience a miscarriage without any symptoms, even after a heartbeat is detected, and this type of miscarriage usually happens within the first twelve weeks. Sometimes your body still thinks you're pregnant so you can still have pregnancy symptoms, but in some women the only symptom of a silent miscarriage is the loss of pregnancy symptoms. I had my first ultra sound at 5 weeks, 6 days, to make sure I wasn't having an ectopic pregnancy, and all was normal, and there was a heartbeat, 118 bmp. I had a blood test the following week and my hormone levels were increasing and I haven't had any issues so I haven't been stressing all that much. Up until now I was considering myself lucky to not be experiencing any bad pregnancy symptoms (no morning sickness, just can't stand the smell of chicken, and have mild cramps every now and then, and peeing comically often). My next appointment (my first with my ob/gyn) is at week 12, on May 24th and it just can't come fast enough, now I'm paranoid I could have a silent miscarriage and I wouldn't notice because my pregnancy symptoms are so mild I probably wouldn't notice the loss of them. My mom works in the E.R as a charge nurse and I know they have an ultra sound machine on the same floor- I asked her if she could have someone to teach me how to use it so I could just maybe go in and listen to my baby's heartbeat whenever I wanted, to calm my nerves — she laughed at me- guess that wasn't a realistic idea- so any advice on how I can calm my nerves during this incredibly nerve wrecking time?

Hang in there. I know that there is a ton of scary information our there. I would recommend that you take a break from looking at all of that information online at least until after your next appointment. All of that stress isn't good for you or your baby.

I know that it's so hard not to freak right now. With my first pregnancy, I was terrified about everything. We had been trying to conceive for over a year. I didn't have any pregnancy symptoms until half way through the 2nd trimester and that scared the pants off me. It's normal to not have any symptoms or to have all of them. It just depends on the pregnancy. Hang in there. Best of luck!

Hey! Maybe it is a good idea to just step away from all the scary stuff. The baby books and the Internet...My first pregnancy I started feeling the same way. Got so inundated with all the what if's that I spent my entire pregnancy worried about everything! I am not sure I enjoyed it nearly as much as I should have. And #2 was so quick after #1 that I know I did not as much either. I don't know why they put all that stuff in the baby books and online because it just just scare the crap out of everyone when there really isn't anything we can do - what happens will happen. Stress will do nothing but harm, so best to just try to relax. :O)
If you want to hear your baby's heartbeat, there is a doppler monitor you can rent online that you can keep at home and hear your baby whenever you want. We did that with my first pregnancy just because I thought it would be super cool. It was an awesome little device. I would guess U/S often would not be great for the baby...but a doppler monitor like they use at the doc's office would be a great method to hear baby's heart :O)

http://www.babybeat.com/ this is where we rented from.

relax! and good luck!!
