I have type 1 diabetes and am 8 weeks pregnant
jjneedsursupport posted:
I am very happy about this, but my blood sugar levels were not well-controlled beforehand; my A1C was 7.3 when I found out I was pregnant. I use an insulin pump. I am worried about my baby having a birth defect, about having a miscarriage, or him or her being born as stillborn.

Since I found out I was pregnant, I am getting my blood sugars under better control. Sometimes it is very difficult for me, as occasionally I get crazy cravings, but I know that I can do it, and my baby will thank me for it! I am considering going on a low carb diet to reduce my need for insulin, but I am not sure I would have enough energy on that sort of diet to last me through the day.

Anyone else in the same boat or know someone who is? This certainly is a test of my self-discipline, and my faith. Thank you so much

Hi. I'm a Type 2 Diabetic and I just had my baby in December. My eating habits were monitored very closely. It's very important that the sugar levels are under control, especially in the early months while your baby is developing. My A1C was really crazy. I think it was in the range of 10. I know you can do it. Do it for your beautiful growing baby! I had to stick to the carb counting during the pregnancy. I checked my sugar 4 times a day, I really hated that part. Get with a nutritionist or diabetes educator to find a meal plan that works for you and it will make it easier for you. It helped for me. Congratulations!!!

I'm also type 1 and was in your situation. Going low carb is not good for you and your fetus. Eating low glycemic carbs is though. Lots of veggies and fruits and protein are what you need.
I was told to eat what you feel like eating in proportions that satisfy you. Your need for insulin will increase throughout your pregnancy as the placenta gets larger and causes you to be insulin resistant.

I was never the regimental diabetic. I hate writing down my carbs counts and sugar levels. I hate testing so much. But the little thing growing in there is counting on me to make sure he/she is healthy. I do it for myself and the life inside of me.
