Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery

wichelmana posted:
Well, after consulting with my doctor tonight about my attack on new years day, we've decided to go ahead with the surgery to remove my gallbladder. I have a consultation on Friday with a surgeon, and more than likely surgery next week or the week following.

I will keep everyone updated before I go in for surgery, and afterwords, with how everything goes, given I'll be 17 weeks pregnant on Thursday.

Wish me luck! =/ I'm nervous as heck considering I'm almost 22 and this will be my very first surgery, as well as the first time that I will be put under.

I had my gallbladdder taken out abut 7 years ago. Stayed in the hospital one night. Still have a very small scar. Overall, I remember it not being a big deal. I went back to work the next week. Good luck!

I had mine removed in August (the same day as my LMP actually!) It wasn't bad at all. I was back at work within a week. I hope everything goes smoothly!

Thanks guys, I'm glad to know that it went well for those of you who did have the procedure done and such.

Like I said, it's my first surgery, and being 17-19 weeks (somewhere around that general area when I have the surgery done) isn't helping my nerves any.

I think what I'm most afraid of, is being put under. I've never had anesthesia before, and I guess what it comes down to, is fear of the unknown/not knowing what the hell is going on while I'm out. I hate not knowing what is going on, especially when it comes to my body...

I'm taking a random guess though, that they'll keep me overnight to monitor baby, just to make sure that s/he is alright afterwords and such...uhg. It's a double edged sword. I'm looking forward to feeling better and what not, but I'm deathly afraid of what I have to do TO feel better.

I'm afraid of being put under too. They gave me something just to relax me before they even gave me the general anesthesia and I don't remember a thing after the anesthesiologist said, "I'm just giving you something to relax..." I sure hope I wasn't talking incoherently.

They may keep you or they may not. I got sent home 2 hours after surgery. With you being pregnant, that could be a completely different story. My doctor wasn't willing to do the surgery if I was pregnant. I live in the malpractice capitol of the country though, so I know that's why. Everything I've read said it's safe to do while pregnant.

Haha...my luck, they'll give me something to relax me, and then I'll say something completely random and stupid. My husband did that when he was put under for his wisdom teeth surgery...started talking to the nurse that escorted us out to the car about how 'most people find out that they're pregnant during or right after winter, because in the winter no one has anything better to do than make babies' >___< Little embarrassing. Lol.

I didn't expect my doctor to jump to surgery right away, to be honest. When I went in, I figured she say "oh yeah, we'll just keep you on the low fat diet, and see how things go, and go from there". So needless to say, when she said surgery to remove it I was all "asdfjhadk WHA? o_o"

Her reasoning behind it was that, on a low fat diet, baby isn't getting all of the fat's that s/he actually needs, and that it could be really risky if I were to have another attack down the line. So pretty much the pros of having it taken out, outweigh the cons at this point in time.

The surgeon that I have though is pretty good...I had his wife as my primary care provider for a while before I got pregnant with my first and switched. And my mom recommended the surgeon that I got. So we'll see what he says today. I have to leave for my appointment in about 1.5 hours.

Wow! Where have I been? This is the first time I am reading all of this. I am so sorry that you are concerned and worried (although I think you have the right to be). I am sure your doc is doing what he/she thinks is best for you and this baby. I am also sure that everything will go well.

Looking forward to an update. Take care of yourself and try not to stress too much!

Update:

The surgery consultation went well yesterday. Pretty much all green to go from here...I get a physical/prenatal appointment on the 11th, and then I have surgery on the 13th. As long as everything is alright with me and baby, and I don't go into preterm labor afterwords, I should be let go a few hours after I get out of surgery.
