Everybody experiences contractions a little differently. However they tend to start off like period cramps and then progress to rhythmic waves of intense tightening across the abdomen to the point where you can time how long they are lasting and how much time in-between she is less uncomfortable. It's true labor when nothing she does makes her feel better. If she can sit, stand or lay comfortably she's most likely not in full blown labor yet.

Like I said, everyone is different but when I went into labor with my first I finally knew immediately what was going on. EXTREMELY painful (for me), tons of pressure and every minute of contractions felt like an hour! LOL!
