When to discuss employment status

I am a regular poster here, but am posting anon since it is a public board and I don't want to tip off my employer.

I am currently working, but planning to resign when I go on maternity leave. I don't have any sick leave accrued and at this time I just want to stay home with the baby and my DS. We can still live off of DH salary, so it's just the right decision for our family.

I have not brought up the subject officially with my employer. My boss hasn't asked about it, other then mentioned a few in the future type comments, so indicates that she is planning on me coming back. Yesterday though, basically the guy who is the CEO talked to me about a project and asked when I would be returning after the baby. It caught me off guard, so I just said "I don't know, I took 3 months off with DS"

I am not a good liar, so it felt bad for me to be dishonest and not give him the heads up, but at the same time I feel like I still have two months of work and don't want to pin myself in with a pending resignation, you know like I don't want to be unincluded in stuff because people know I'm short term.

My boss is going on travel after today until the last week of June, so I was thinking of submitting my resignation letter then when she returns which would still give them one month notice, provided I make it all the way to my anticipated last day.

What do you think, should I just be open and tell people I am leaving, or is it ok to keep it under wraps for another month?

I am in the same boat as you. I plan to wait until I have two weeks left of maternity leave and then tell them that I'm not coming back. I don't want to tell anyone now in case they try to push me out of the door before I am ready!

Hi If you have FMLA and ML benefits you might want to reatin the employment to get those benefits and then resign later on esp if you are employed in California or New jersy

I'll check more into it, I think FMLA here is just that you can take leave (can be without pay) without being fired, so no monetary benefit. When I went on leave with my DS I had about 2 months worth of sick leave built up and used that, then was off without for about a month.

I do have health insurance, but I am also on DH's family health insurance, so I'm not worried about losing it. In fact with DS, DH's insurance would have paid more on my anesthesiologist's bill if they would have been my primary, but because they were my secondary at the time I had to pay several more hundred out-of-pocket because that doctor was not a PPO with my insurance.

I have given it a lot of thought and I have worked hard to build up a pretty good program over the last 8 years that I have been here. If I string them out I just hold back the projects I have worked so hard to put in place, so I want to make the clean break and let them move on with finding my replacement. I just want to cover my back a little and not play my cards too early.

I think that giving your employer a 2 week notice is appropriate. I agree that if you tell them too early, they will probably leave you out of things.

I will be coming back to work after my doctor says I can, but only for 2 days a week. I wish I could afford to pay for day care, then I'd work more but my Mom has offered to keep my twins for 2 days a week so I can get out and earn a little money and get a break. I went by my work today (I'm a pharmacy tech) and I realized that I really miss my co-workers and customers.

Staying home with a new baby is a great option for lots of families. If my mom couldn't help us, I'd have to, also. Keep us posted!

P.S. I love the option to post anonymously on here. Sometimes I worry that someone will see something that I want to keep private, too.
