Group B Strep

My strep test came back positive but they told me its a strain resistant to clyndamicin and I'm allergic to penicillin. My doctor tells me that I would most likely get some "big guns" antibiotic via IV (although they all are given by IV, this is ONLY ever given that way). She recommended that when I get to L&D I should ask for "penicillin's cousin." Something that starts with an "A." Anyone have a similar experience? I was positive for Group B with my daughter so that's not the problem, just the antibiotic description freaks me out a little. Especially since my OB said very nicely that she is even leery using the "big gun" antibiotic. (I think it starts with a "V")

I'm in the same boat as you, allergic to penicillin, although I haven't been tested for Strep B yet (next Friday!).

Penicillin's cousin could be Amoxicillin, which I'm also allergic to, so perhaps watch out for all the -cillins if they try to suggest one. I'd hate to have an allergic reaction while trying to give birth!

As for the big gun that starts with a V, it sounds like Vancomycin which indeed is a heavy hitter.

Good luck!!

Yes, Vancomycin sounds about right. Im ok that it would get the job done although it seems there is no "in between" med that I'm not allergic to. And it wasn't Amoxicillin, Im allergic to that too. It was a shorter name. Wish I wrote it down...

I almost figured you were also allergic to Amoxicillin. Sorry I can't think of any other ones that it might be!

For the Vanco, you'll probably do fine on it, just check on side affects etc as per usual. I know they try not to use it very often if a lighter weight antibiotic will do so they don't create more antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria among other things.

Also I think they only run the antibiotics when you're in labor and that's it? I'm not that up on it, but if so, that's really a short course of it.

Sorry this is stressing you out!
