Low Sodium Diet

FrenchBulldogMom posted:
Well, after spending a good part of last week in the hospital for observation of my high-blood pressure, I'm now on a low-sodium diet.
The good news is that I don't have any protein in my urine.

It's been really hard to find things that I can eat in a restaurant. I had no idea that my favorite appetizer at one place has almost 3k sodium and the ribs have 7500 grams!!! I'm only allowed 2k grams per day.

So far, I have been eating fresh fruits and veggies, a few sodas, juice, meat with salt substitute, and peanut M&Ms. I'm supposed to be on bed rest, but one of my doctors told me that walking around a little bit will help my circulation. I think it will be safe for my Mom to take me to Trader Joe's to look for low-sodium foods. Wish me luck!

Anybody else been put on low-sodium? I'm 35 weeks on Tuesday and they're trying to get me to 36 or 37 before we do the c-section.

Hi FrenchBulldogMom -

Yikes! So sorry to hear you were in the hospital!

I had preeclampsia that continued after I delivered. Was prescribed HBP meds and bedrest for about 4 weeks after my daughter was born, but I am fine now. Both my husband and I have a family history of high blood pressure so we are on a low sodium diet in our home. It did take my husband some time to get used to.

We buy little to no packaged or box foods, frozen meals, canned veggies, juices, soda's.....the list goes on. Be very careful of breads and pasta sauce - lots of sodium!

After you get into a routine it's easy to cook with little or no salt. I use Penzys Salt Free Spices or Mrs. Dash spices. We buy fresh chicken, pork, turkey. We eat a lot of pasta, fresh fruits and veggies. Our sides will be raw carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, red peppers, sprinkled with spices and a little olive oil drizzed on them. Or a "dip" made of dressing (low salt).

I know this is easier said than done, especially on bedrest, so Trader Joe's is a good place to start.

I got some whole grain mustard so I can make my own vinagrette. I also found some sodium-free baking powder so I can make some pancakes. Tomorrow I'm going to make pasta with no salt added sauce. I hope it's good, LOL!
