I was just diagnosed with GD at 26 weeks and will be meeting with my dietitian in a week. I was given a list of things to eat and things to avoid until then when they'll give me a more comprehensive diet as well as a monitor. I've been pretty stressed about the whole thing, (I almost passed out during my 3hr test) especially since this is my second pregnancy and I had no complications whatsoever with my first, plus I've been really good about eating healthy. I have such a hard time eating now and emotionally charged, especially when they told me what could happen to my baby. I've gone to the store, read labels, done my "homework" and checked for low-carbs and seen all these sugar free things and splenda and what not (what's safe?), I've been having big craving lately, but I've heard some sweeteners are not safe for pregnant women. I know I won't have an idea until I see the dietitian. I guess I'm just overwhelmed right now. What has worked for you ladies out there?

I felt the same way, and there are times when I still do but really, the diet is TOTALLY doable and I have been able to control my sugars w/ diet and exercise and have had no issues whatsoever. I read too much stuff on the internet though so I started getting a LOT of anxiety after learning what can happen during the pregnancy and to my LO w/ GD but my DR told me to relax about it as the issues really only occur when GD is ignored. I still stress about it but that also forces me to be extra diligent w/ my diet and exercise.

Also, there are a few "perks" w/ having GD.....You won't gaine very much weight at all. In fact, gaining weight has been my biggest challenge thus far! Also, you get extra ultra sounds throughout your pregnancy. Starting at 30 weeks I will get them at every appointment. Who doesn't love seeing their LO more often! And, although at first I saw this as a bad thing as I get close to my DD I am seeing the bright side of this as well....my DR won't let me go past 39 weeks so if I don't come on my own before that, I will be induced at 39W which means I have just 10 weeks left to go!

I had GD with my first pregnancy. It stressed me out at first too. The diet isn't really that bad. I wasn't hungry all the time. I had to just make better choices. I was insulin dependent and since that pregnancy, I have developed diabetes full time. With my second pregnancy, I started taking insulin at around 4 weeks and following the diet. Both of those pregnancies were fine and my babies were small. I know one of the things they worry about is your baby getting big too fast.

I am now 11 weeks into this pregnancy and again started insulin at 4 weeks. Everything is going great so far!

I agree with the PP, you will get closer monitoring and get to see your LO ALOT more!

You will be just fine!
Good luck!

I was diagnosed last week. What has been working for me so far is making the carbs that I am eating count. For example, I have been traveling a lot this weekend, so I made sure that my snacks were wheat crackers and cheese or fruit like a small apple or banana. If I had to eat fast food, I would always order a small burger or a small package of nuggets and then get a side salad. For me, eating salads with my meals provides me with more food without worrying about the calories.

I don't bother looking for low-carb options, I just stick to the proportions that they give you. One English muffin (wheat) equals 2 carbs and I add peanut butter to it for more protein. You could also make your own egg McMuffin with an english muffin and eggs or egg beaters.

I don't look at any of the stuff with artificial sweetner in it. Most doctors can't agree on what is safe and several of them are definately not. If I want yogart, I have regular yogart in the kiddie or travel size. Most of the carb portions match more what you might put on a small child's plate, rather than what a normal adult might eat. Just add extra protein, salad, and veggies to round out the meal.
