hi im new to this website and this disease..i was just diagnosed of having minor-moderate hip arthiritis..the only thing the nurse said was to exercise daily and no running..but that doesnt tell me a thing about this disease..i came on this website for answers and hoping someone whos going though this can enlighten me..all i know is im a runner..i was running one day and all of a sudden this pain in both hips just attacked me..i thought it would go away quick but didnt til the next day which is the only reason I went to the Dr..she gave me xrays then a week later told me i had it..but now ive had no pain in 3 full days..is this normal? is it possible the xray reading was wrong? or is this how it works? also is this an agressive disease? or does that solely depend on me? also my biggest Q is I want another baby, i know wt gain is BAD but can i do this safely? i havent taken any meds yet at all is that gonna make it worse quick? im obviously completely in the dark here anyones help is highly appreciated and thank you to who ever can help

Hi my name is tara and i am 33 was diagnosed with ra with it effecting nothing but my hips. Yes the pain will come and go and when least expected. I had my daughter 2 years ago with this ra in my hips, and it is possible to have more children. But please get a c-section. My doctor made me push for 22 hours. Your hips wont spread easy and it will hurt like hell. I ended up pushing so hard i had a prolapsed uterus. so please just tell them you want a c- section. I can no longer have babies due to this and needed a hysterctomy or how ever you spell that. Talk to a RA doctor and get on some meds after you have the baby and keep your self healthy. Good luck.

thank you so much for responding to my post..i feel so in the dark since receiving the news..1 question as well does this progess quick? and is there anything to do to prolong it getting worse? or is it one of those things that has a mind of there own? yes C-sect is all i will do anyways..my son was a csect too..well im so sorry to you to be in such pain so young..i was upset that i was young but your a lot younget then me..Also im not even sure what type of Arthiritis i have because i couldnt understand a word (lang. barrier) i just know i havent ran since because that seems to be the only thing as of now that onsets the pain...well this is just a ummer for both of us it is really a life changing for me because of everything i do!! i hope the best for you

Hi, and welcome. Sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis.

Are you seeing a rheumatologist? It's really important to see an arthritis specialist, because diagnosis can be tricky, and different forms of arthritis have different courses and treatments. A rheumatologist will do a complete blood work-up, which helps in making a proper diagnosis.

As far as the aggressiveness of the disease, it depends what type it is. If it is rheumatoid arthritis, the standard is to intervene early with medication, to prevent or slow down damage to the joints.

A rheumatologist can advise you on how to exercise safely, too, and whether running is OK. Exercise is really beneficial to keep your joints limber and strenthen your muscles; swimming is a great alternative to running.

hi thank you for your response...No i havent been referred to one because i just found out i dont have the RH arthiritis i just have the beginning sighns of Osteoartiritis...they said unless pain gets bad then physical therapy and stronger meds..i was told light runing ok just no high impact..i actually did run yeterday very slow and softly and have felt no pain!!! i just wot do it everyday likei was...i really appreciate your respose..this as stressful news to me at first but just learned yesteray its not as bad as originally thougt

That is great news! As a former runner, let me just advise you to listen to your body, never run through pain, wear really supportive shoes (and replace them regularly---you may need to replace them sooner than you used to) and run on soft surfaces.

I am a big believer in physical therapy or working with a physical trainer for a couple sessions to get tips and techniques to strengthen your quads and glutes to minimize stress on your hip joint---before you start experiencing pain.

You might also look into taking fish oil and making other dietary modifications. An anti-inflammatory diet (you can check out Dr. Weil's on his website, and their are others along the same line) can also help ease or ward off symptoms, especially if your symptoms are mild.

thank you so much!!! your suggestions are right..they did start me on fish oil and calcim supplements so ive been doing those for 3 weeks now since this all started..i would love to see a physical therapist but there not giving me that referral yet..and i need to look up "an anti-inflammatory diet" i have no idea what that is..so thank you again youve been a great help

From your history, it is hard to tell if you have an inflammatory arthritis like Rheumatoid, or something more common like Osteoarthritis. Some runners develop labral tears which can be diagnosed by a special type of MRI. In patients with your symptoms, I suggest to patients that they consider seeing an ortho specialist with expertise in hip issues if there is one in your area or a Rheumatologist. In my patients with hip arthritis, I encourage water, stationary bike and other exercises that do not stress the affected joints.

hi Dr. Zashin..thank you so much for your response...i was told it was the Osteoarthiritis..they also said it was the beginning symptoms and not quite 100%..i would love to see a specialist but as of now theyre not giving me the referral..i just want to run..ive tried a very slow soft run and was fine no pain one day did the same thing another time and the pain came..so i obviously know i cant..Iam part of a workout group called stroller strides where we w/o w/ our kids in the stroller..runing jumping etc. and now each day learning my days are coming to an end which saddens me...so every day i learn on my own what i should be doing or not since i cant talk w/ a specialist...Do you know if there is anything i can do to keep this from becoming full blown arthiritis? are there preventers? or is it coming regardless? still refusung to take med. as well as im tring to still have another baby..well thank you for your time and your suggestions if you can!!

As of now, there is no medication that clearly slows done the progression of osteoarthritis. I recommend my patients who may be at risk to take adequate amounts of vitamin D(you can have your doctor check your blood level to determine if you have too little in your body or too much. In addtion, there is definite evidence that those patients who are overweight have increased progression of arthritis, so it is important to maintain an ideal body weight.Enjoy your stroller group.
