Remicade...what can you tell me about it...does it work? Suppose to start in April Remicade Infusions as well as my mtx.

I was hoping to start the beginning of April but been sick since early January. I've done everything I was suppose to...flu shot, pnumonia vacinne, vitamins, etc...but got sick anyway. Been on 3 antibotics and increased prednisone and cough syrup. I've been told my lungs and bronchi "tree" are inflammed. I've also been without a voice for about 3 weeks. I'm beginning to wonder if I will ever get well AND/OR how much of it has to do with the RA???

Thanks!!!

Scott Zashin, MD responded:
If there is infection, doctors avoid starting a biologic like Remicade. It is effective for up 70% of patients and is FDA approved to be taken with methotrexate. Some patients take it without methotrexate but need a higher dose. You might enjoy reading my book Arthritis Without Pain, the Miracle of TNF blockers. While it was written 8 years ago, it reviewes the benefits and side effects of Remicade and many of the other RA drugs.
