Seronegative AND Nodules?

CateP1 posted:
For as long as I've known (20+ years), I've been sero-negative for the RA factor. In past 6-12 mos., I've started to develop (unslightly) nodules. I know that means I am moving into advanced stage, but does that also suggest I likely am sero-positive? Will ask Rheumy, but thought someone here might know.

Scott Zashin, MD responded:
In my experience, only sero positive patients have nodules from RA. Other common conditions that can cause nodules include osteoarthritis. Heberdens and Bouchards nodes are not actually nodules but are bony enlargements over the end and middle joints. Nodules can be found in gout.
