Please help me! I was recently had painful urination and went to my Gynocologist who told me he thought I had genital herpes. He did a vaginal culture test & told me it said I had Type 1. I have been in a monogous relationship w/a man for 4 1/2 years. I HAVE NOT CHEATED on him. He swears he has been faithful to me. I got my blood test & my doctor told me I tested positive for HSV2 (not 1) and that I recently contracted it (within the past 1-3 months. He said if another 3 months or so go by I will probably show up positive for HSV2. He said I haven't had this before (like 30 years ago). My male partner had a kidney transplant 5 years ago & is on immune suppresant drugs. He went to his kidney doctor who performed a blood test today & said he had dormant HSV1 (not HSV2). I am truly
baffled and upset!!!!! How can this be? Can anyone explain this to me? Again, I have not cheated on him. What is happening?

Hello Again, this is Baffled & Confused. I just read the small print on the bottom of my partner's blood test report and it says: "The performance of this assay has not been established for pediatric populations, for neonatal screening OR FOR TESTING THE IMMUNOCOMPROMISED". MY PARTNER IS TAKING DAILY
DOES FOR MEDS TO SUPPRESS HIS IMMUNE SYSTEM BECAUSE OF HIS KIDNEY TRANSPLANT. I called my ins.
co.'s 24 hour nurse hotline, told her this and she said I need to
speak to an infectious disease specialist who may retest the both of us with another test to get answers to this. If anyone has any knowledge of this or experience in this area, can you please comment. Thanks so much.

HSV screening tests tend to check for antibodies the immune system begins to produce after transmission has taken place.
If the immune system is compromised (as it would be in someone who has had a kidney transplant and is on anti-rejection medication that suppresses the immune system to prevent it from attempting to destroy the donated kidney) their test results may not be accurate; in other words, they may be infected but not be able to produce enough antibodies to be picked up by current testing methods.
In other words, your boyfriend may, indeed, be HSV2 positive despite his screening tests not picking up these antibodies.
Thus the suggestion to have further testing done by an Infectious Disease Specialist.
I hope this makes sense...

Dear Gail,
Thank you so very much! I really appreciate your kindness in responding to me. Yes, your answer makes perfect sense. When I read the small print on his test, I thought this indicates that there is a good chance the test results are unrelliable. This was no immaculate infection.
Thank you again. You are wonderful & made my day. I am calling an infectious disease specialist on Monday to make an appointment.
Wishing you the very best, Michelle
