HSV dormant for 8 years+ then WHAM!

Ugh. I tested positive for HSV years ago, just before my then boyfriend (now husband) & I got together. I don't even know which strain it was I tested positive for because, after 8 years without a single sign, I figured I was one of the lucky ones who was going to get away with showing no symptoms. Now, out of the blue, I am apparently having a genital outbreak & it absolutely blows.

So... Aside from just wanting to vent somewhere that people might be able to empathize, I was also wondering if anyone else has had experience with either HSV strain lying dormant for so long before the first outbreak? I went to my OB/GYN on Wed & they thought I just had a UTI & put me on antibiotics. Then today (Sat) the pain became unbearable & I thought I felt what might be sores, so I went to the ER. They did no testing to confirm, the ER dr just based the diagnosis on a visual exam & me advising that I'd had a positive blood test a number of years ago. I'm not in denial over it or anything, I came to terms with the fact that I had been exposed to HSV long ago & I told my husband about it when we first got together. I also realize that the virus can in fact remain dormant, I just haven't been able to find info on people going SO long before their FIRST outbreak. I'm just kind of wondering if I should have insisted on more testing to make sure that's actually what it is... Especially considering that the ER doctor I saw today initially said that everything looked fine during my exam (I had to show her where the pain was before she said, "Oh I do see a little something there.").

Also, after doing a ton of googling on the whole subject, it seems like the dosage of Valtrex I was given is kind of low for a first outbreak. My Rx is 500MG 2x a day for 5 days... Just wondering if anyone might have any input on that?

And lastly, of course, any suggestions on how to ease the symptoms would be greatly appreciated! Like I said, & as anyone who's ever had an outbreak can attest to, this blows!!

Thanks for any/all input!

First off you knew that you had herpes even though you did not know which one eight ears ago. So all this time you knew that you had it. The Er is the worst place to go for herpes as they usually do not do a good job when it comes to herpes diagnosis of herpes. The Doc should have taken a swab and cultured it to know which type you had. I would recommend that you go and get a type specific igg blood test to confirm if you have HSV 1 or 2 genitally. It would also be good if your husband had the same test to see if he does or does not have herpes genitally. He may or may not have herpes. It is just so the both of you know your status.

When it comes to it laying dormant that long it is not unusual. I never had an ob that I was aware of but 10 years later I had my first ob and that is when I first knew I had herpes. There have been couples who have been together and faithful for 25 - 30 years or more and one of them suddenly gets an ob and that is the first they were aware of it.

When it comes to your love making now I would not change a thing unless your husband wants to make changes. The two of you have been having sex for so long the only thing is that you may want to avoid sex if you have an ob. If you do not make a big deal off this then your husband will most likely not think it is a big deal either.

My wife stilll does not have HsV 2 and it has been a .lot more than the eight years. So perhaps your husband does not have genital herpes either.

Inatial dosage I think is for 500 Mg for 10 days but rember that this is not your initial obb. so I think that what you wer given should put the herpes to ped for now. See how many obs you get and if they seem to be quite ofetn then ask for R/s for suppressive therapy dosage.

Correction I believe that the correct initial ob dosage is 500mg 2X/day for 10 days.
