My girlfriend and I have just recently become sexually active with each other. We're both in our 30's. We have shared passionate kisses for 6 weeks or so, and while our sex has involved the use of a condom for the most part except for once, last night. That date also included me performing oral sex on her.

This morning, she called to tell me that she woke up with a cold sore on her mouth. She said that she was diagnosed with HSV-1 as a teenager and has taken medication since then. She said that before now, she has not had an outbreak in about a year.

I have never dealt with this sort of situation. While I understand that HSV-1 is typically transmittable only when an outbreak is actively occurring, the time difference between us being together and her outbreak was at most 5 hours.

What risks do I face here? Are there any precautions I can take, or is it too late? What should I do if I start to see the symptoms of an outbreak? Is there any other advice you could offer on this matter?

Many people have oral herpes HSV 1. There is nothing you can do now. You may or may not have HSV 1. All you can do is wait to see what happens. If you get an ob go and be seen with in 48 hrs and get the area swabbed/cultured to confirm what it is. Even if you get HSV 1 genitally it is not a big deal. You will have one more ob after the first in the first year and then on average you would get one ob every other year. So don't sweat it. In three months go and get a type specific igg blood test to know your status. Read the Herpes Handbook a link is fount by clicking on my avatar.
