The difference between postive and negative test for herpes

Can you explain the difference between the negative and postive test. As I understand, if you test negative that mean you recently came in contact with Herpes. If you test postive that means that person had it for months. is this correct

Negative test: you don't have it
Positive test: you do, you can't tell how long someone has had it by a blood test.

The catch is that there is a 3 month period that it takes for the antibodies to become detectable in a blood test. So if you are going for herpes tesing wait atleast 3 months since your last sexual encounter to be tested and your results will be accurate. If someone contracted herpes, and went for testing within the 3 months, it likely show as a negative. That's why we recommend waiting the 3 month period prior to testing for more accurate results.

Thanks for breaking it down....I was advised by my doc end of March:0 Just going for a regular yrly exam. Yes, there was pain trying to have sex, and I could not understand it....Now I know why the numbers you tossed out sounds just like what my doc indicated to me.....I recently been exposed:( I had a regular internal pap | then blood drawn etc....came back a week later, because I was OVER THE TOP w/what I was advised of....First let me say my doc has been my doc since I was 14yo...so I totally trust what he says....
As I've stated in previous post prior to my current BF there was NO sexual anything for 10 yrs....nothing!

I know my in my heart the current gave this to me....I cried every single day, minute, second, week....etc.....Yes, I take med's per my doc gave me a script for 3mo supply & I take them everyday.....

Anyway, I concur w/what you have indicated.....Sad, but I do...
