About 3 yrs. ago I started getting these bumps on my lower back and sometimes between my upper buttocks. They would ich a bit but not get sore.I asked my doctor and she said'that looks like herpes'but I have yet to get a test done.
My question is-can herpes be dormant?I have been in a monogamus relationship for 6 years and neither one of us have cheated.

Next time I get those bumps -I am going to my doctors office to get the nurses to swab them!

Yes, herpes can be dormant in the sense that one can go for many years without an outbreak.

Thanks.I was afraid of that! But what would cause it to start having outbreaks?I know one cause is stress but ,I've been a single mum of 3 for 16 yrs.and I know I was stressed before those bumps started 3-4 years ago!

That's one of the mysteries about this virus, it can be so unpredictable.

Allow me to share my own experiences with herpes -- I've lived with it for over 30 years and while the first 1-2 years I had regular outbreaks, for the remaining years it has been dormant for anywhere from 6 months to several years at a time. I've become very familiar with the symptoms of an outbreak --- first a slight itch, becoming more intense, progressing to a bump that becomes a sore. Doctors told me the virus lives in the nerve, and travels down that nerve to it's end where the outbreak occurs. Initially outbreaks occurred in the vaginal area, almost always in the same place. But years later, they now almost always are at the base of my spine right where the butt crack begins. I strongly suggest you get tested. Valtrex has been a blessing for me since I started taking it about 10 years ago. I take a very low dose each day and, other than when I'm especially stressed, I can keep the virus dormant.

Thank you.I did go and get a test done today and I'll soon find out but my doctor really thinks it is heepes.Great!!
Luckily,I've only had the bumps where I said-on my lower back and base of spine.
She was going to prescribe the meds for it but I don't have a prescription plan and she said 1 pill costs about $50!!She said the outbreak doe'snt look too bad but if it does get worse, come back.
She said ,in the meantime ,when I do get an outbreak, cover it with elastoplast bandages.
I just did a quiz about herpes on this website and found out an out break can be cause by surgery-for one.Now that I thinkof it,I had surgery bout 3 yrs.ago and thats when all this fun(!)started!Crap!
