Is it possible that I have had herpes simplex 2 for more than 20 years dormant, which just became active in terms of genital sores? I have only had sex with my husband since 1992.

also, is it possible that herpes simplex 1 (as I have always gotten cold sores inside my mouth) could just appear genitally?

It could be either. You can have herpes for 20, 25,or 30 years and suddenly get an ob for the first time. It is also possible that if your husband has HSV 1 orally that he gave HSV 1 genitally through oral sex.

The best thing to do is go and get a type specific igg blood test to see what your status is for HSV 1 and HSV 2. If you test positive for HSV 1 then the next time you get an out break go and be seen within 48 hours and get the area swab/cultured so that you can confirm that it is HSV 1 genitally. That is the only way to know for sure.
