HSV1 transmission

I have cold sores, but have not had an outbreak in over 6 months. My 15 year old daughter recently had strep throat followed by a viral illness. She was complaining of a sore vaginal area so I took a look to find a white patch just outside her vagina. The next day or so the white patch was gone and it looked like a sore, kind of like a canker sore. There was definitely no blistering. She also had some white creamy discharge. It continued to be painful and hurt to urinate. She had a pediatrician appt a few days later and the doc said she was not sure if it was yeast, but she had seen something similar in the past following a viral infection. She referred us to a gynecologist the next morning. The gynecologist took one look at the sore and said it is herpes!! My daughter is a virgin and has never had oral sex or any touching by a boy in that area. She asked if anyone in the family gets cold sores and I said I do. She then explained that I probably inadvertently gave it to her but she wasn't judging me! I asked her how that could even be possible. She said I would have touched the sore, then touched my daughters hand who then touched her vaginal area. Is this really even possible? She did a swab test and said she was sorry to give me bad news but she is sure it is herpes. I told her I will wait for the results which is making me crazy at this point. Could I really have given this to my daughter with no recent outbreak? I am really hoping the results are negative since that scenario just seems pretty unlikely. Thanks for any help.

Visual diagnosis are not as accurate as testing. I find it very hard to believe that you gave your daughter HSV1, considering that you would have had to engage in oral sex to have transmitted this to her!! The Dr is not up-to-date on herpes. No you cannot transmit the virus in the way your Dr described. Impossible.

Thank you so much for your reply, it makes me feel better but I am still nervous for the result even though it doesn't make sense!! This same doctor also told me she has a patient with HSV2 and the only way they can trace it back is to a toilet seat! I didn't think that was possible either. She prescribed Valtrex for my daughter and said we needed to start that right away even before the results came back to help avoid another outbreak in the future. I then got another shock at the pharmacy when that script cost me $172. She is currently taking it until we get results which probably won't be until early next week. Is there any harm it that?

There is no harm in her taking it even if she does not have HSV. I agree with elle that this is far fetched. The Doc should know that HSV is not transmitted via a toilet seat. Let us know what the results are when you get them back.

Got the results today and it was no surprise that she was negative for hsv 1 & 2. I really wasn't too worried anymore after your replies assured me that it wasn't even possible, so thank you for that! The doctor is still somewhat convinced it is hsv so would like to do a blood test in 4 weeks. I told her no thanks! Needless to say we won't be going back to this clueless doctor. Thanks again.

I am glad for you ass well. I gues it is time to find a new Doc. One that knows what they are talking about.
