My husband and I have been married 20 yrs. It has been that long since either of us has had another partner (30 yrs for me) until a month ago. I've know of an affair since last January, but it turned to the point of intercourse just a few weeks ago. From the point of contact for me to the day of testing was 7 days. I tested positive for both HSV 1 & 2. I'm not surprised by the 1 due to the fact that he has had cold sores since childhood (I've never had one). My HSV 2 was an IgG, Type Spec 1.47 level. I immediately blamed his affair partner, but I'm wondering if I've had these antibodies for 20-30 yrs.? I have not had any symptoms...I've never thought that I had any type of STD. I've had yeast infections once in a great while, but I do one treatment and it's gone. I have several health conditions (autoimmune) and the latest one requires me to be taking a couple of medications to weaken my immune system. Would the antibodies show up within the 7 days due to that fact? Are STD's tested during pregnancies? I've had 5, 2 live births. I will be checking with my dr. about past testing since that would really be an indicator as to when I got herpes. The whole affair business was tough enough, but this really rocked my world too, his too. My husband is planning to be tested, but he should test positive regardless since he has obviously been with me for 20 yrs. and also with the mistress. If either of us brought this into the marriage from the start there would be no way of telling which one of us had it first?
Thank you~

I had my first outbreak last summer, after I had been in a monogamous (or so I believe) relationship for 2-1/2 years. My partner swears he had no idea that he had HSV 2 (he was tested after I was diagnosed, and is HSV 2 positive, although he has never had an outbreak as far as he knows.) He was very surprised and contacted several previous partners to let them know. We also wonder if it is possible to have had it for so many years without an outbreak and who brought it into our relationship (not that it matters, at this point). All the information says you will have an outbreak soon after contracting it, but that doesn't seem to be the case with us, unless things are not what they seem!

I would wait till 3 months from now and and get retested. Your results are a very low positive and you need to wait to see if your values get greater. Click on my Tiger and there is a link in my profile for the Herpes Handbook which also has a video and details on Terri Warrens book. That will help you to learn more about herpes. At his point it is difficult to say if you do or do not have herpes as this is a low positive result . .

You can go years without having an HSV ob. Also your first ob can be so minor that you may have not noticed it and thought it was some type of infection. But for you two years or so could be normal for your first noticeable ob or it could have been your first. My wife still has not gotten HSV 2 from me and it is over 20 years. And it is possible for your partner to have HSV 2 and have not known symptoms. That is what is so odd about HSV 2. You can have no ob and still have HSV 2. As I noted in the reply to the original poster read more as I noted to her.
