    Oral sex and genital symptoms

"As long as you don't have herpes sores on your mouth, you can perform oral sex on your partner at any time, including when you have an outbreak of genital symptoms."

This statement is made at this link on webmd:

Is this true? would an expert please comment? I keep reading conflicting views. I have had HSV2 for over 20 years and rarely have an outbreak.

Yes, this is true. If the infection is on your genitals and you are only using your mouth, the virus cannot be tramsmitted. The virus needs skin-to-skin transmission from the infected area. So giving oral during an outbreak would be fine but intercourse would not.

Thanks. Now, about 10yrs ago I had cold sores come up and haven't had any new sores in the 10yrs since. I am uncertain whether the cold sores were HSV2 & I came up negative on HSV1 on test last week. Since I don't have oral outbreaks to do swab, I am unsure what to do: oral sex or not. Complicated, right?

Can the HSV2 travel to oral and then retreat and never come back? so oral transmission not likely?

From your testing we know thta you do not have HSV 1 orally so if you had oral sores similiar to oral symptoms then most likely the only other thing it could be is HSV 2 orally so it appears that you have HSV 2 both orally and genitally.

If you are currently sexually active with your partner and he is not using condoms then his risk of getting HSV 2 from you giving him oral sex would be no higher than from you genital area. So if he is prepared to have sex with you that what stops you from giving him oral sex? Ask him if he will accep this and if he does then what is stopping you from giving him oral sex?
