Are Genital warts the same as HPV?!?!

I have been reading this discussion for many pages, and I am a little confused. I have a painless wart on the crease of my two right labias [majora & minora> and it has been around for about 4 weeks. I had the gyno check it out and she said that I was overreacting and it was [verbatim> just a "skin thing." I insisted on a full STD screen and Pap smear. Good thing I did! The same doctor sent me the mail message: "Negative for all STD's, but abnormal Pap test. Please call me." After a tough night, I called in the morning, and the nurse insisted that it was no big deal, but I tested positive for HPV. I hear genital warts are excruciatingly painful, but I poke and prod the heck out of my little [but growing> bump and it feels as painless as a freckle. Should I be expecting this thing to break open and shed and start hurting? Or are HPV bumps different altogether?

Visual diagnosis is the only way HPV can be diagnosed, according to Web MD. There are no blood tests for this virus. http://www.webmd.com/sexual-conditions/hpv-genital-warts/hpv-symptoms-tests

As georgiagail mentioned, genital herpes and genital warts are different. The former appear like blisters or sores, and are caused by HSV; the latter are growths that resemble cauliflowers and are brought about by HPV.

All warts are caused by HPV. It is possible to have HPV and not have warts, since not all carriers of the virus develop genital warts. It is also possible for the warts to go away on their own but often they need treatment: my sister had to use Wartscide to get rid of her warts, but my roommate just ignored her warts and they disappeared.

Genital warts do not cause cancer. Cervical cancer is caused by high-risk HPV types (HPV 16 & 18) while those that cause genital warts are low-risk types (HPV-6 and HPV-11). There is currently no treatment for HPV infections.

Gail, are you a doctor? anyway... you seem to know alot so I have a question. i recently discovered warts on my crotch, and got tested immediatly for stds. doc said i was clean (thank you god) but i still have the warts. im goin to try a cream to get rid of them before I do the cryosurgery. but I was wondering...it says here on the WebMd site.. "While there is no cure for HPV, the good news is the infection often clears on its own. If it does not, and treatment is needed." how long til it clears on its own? and how do i know its gone? cuz i dont want to risk infecting someone else, until its gone. and when can I have sex again without the condom? (even though I wore the condom and still got the warts)

HPV does not "go away" on its own, it may lay dormant, but once you have been infected you now have it. I was diagnosed when I was 18 with HPV, never had symptoms, and they didn't even find it in my PAP, it was found in my blood during regular screening. It wasn't until 6 months after I was diagnosed that i had my first abnormal PAP. I ended up going for a colposcopy which was very uncomfortable, they cut out parts of my cervix. and several months later found out that didn't work so had to go for a cryo to remove my cancerous cells. after the last procedure i had been having clear PAPs for 6years. Now I'm 7 months pregnant with my first child and i have a wart (just one) for the first time ever. So I really dont know what to believe when it comes to doctors and what is read online. Apparently once having HPV, pregnancy can cause it to become active and can cause warts. I have been always checked regularly and never had anything other than HPV. and now with this wart and being pregnant i'm more nervous than anything and afraid of how it will effect my delivery and my baby.

Again, don't confuse HSV (i.e., herpes) with HPV (genital warts).

your an idiot . hpv is simular but different from herpes is horrifyingly painful and you should stfu and give helpful advice to the people to have it instead of basing your facts on something you dont know because you never experienced it for your damn self ,....

You may want to re-read her response again. She said NOT to confuse HPV with Herpes, she knows they are different. How do you know she hasn't experienced it herself???
