Nudity was a norm in Ancient Greece, as well as many cultures today. Many are not aware that nudity is a normal condition that has prevailed throughout most of mankind's existence. We still use words such as gym, gymnasium and gymnastics, which all come from the common Greek adjective meaning "naked",or the related verb whose meaning is "to train naked" Boys would be more comfortable with their bodies. If guys worry about the size of their penis then being naked isn't going to solve the problem. Being naked around others just for the sake of it when youi have a modern day set of hangups is going to get you exactly nowhere.

OTOH, as you remarked, athletes and sportsmen have fewer hangups about their bodies so why not simply encourage more sports? At least there will be a good reason for it - their health.

As for insisting on nakedness because of the etymology of a word, it's ridiculous. do you know what the word "Gymnasium" means in German? I doubt being naked there would solve any problems ...

I know I do not have. Because I was raised to be comfortable naked around other guys. FLC, some male have different sexual thought around nude males. Therefore It only requires the word NO. All males are not intrested in sports; but showers after physical educations so be required.
I used Greece, but nudity is still common in Japan, Korea, India, Africa, and South America. Greek was the begin of the modern language. Today language

I am 53 and was raised with having to take communal showers started in 5th grade PE in a private prep school and have no hang-ups about being naked in the locker room. My penis size is about average BTW. I think the more recent generation of boys don't have communal showers therefore they take various measures to hide their penis when changing clothes in the locker rooms. I am not sure what their modern day hang-ups are? What am I not understanding?

If I'm thinking correctly, the issue being posed here is a male being comfortable around other males, and HairyD's proposal is having men naked so they are physically/mentally/emotionally stripped to their core - as well as their counterparts and mentors - sort of leveling the playing field. And by having this sense of equality at an early age would make more men comfortable and bond with others at an earlier age. This would only work if all older males - even slightly older males who are themselves going through a similar situation understand that all men are equal. The understanding of responsibility to all others and the equality of others would have to be practiced in order for this to work properly. Speaking as a late bloomer, non-altheltic type, without guidance provided by other males that could keep a group of emerging adolecents in check, this concept doesn't work. I needed to understand mentally and emotionally first that my male body is perfectly normal - not perfect - when compared to other men. It took me years to feel comfortable with myself physically regardless of how I compare with other men. So while I think I understand a little better what HairyD is stating, I don't think we're able as a society to support this. Maybe if the Victorian age had never happened, and if America wasn't engrained in Puritan ideals, this could have been a possibility. Yeah - I know woulda, coulda, shoulda. Also unfortunately, today in the US, we're become paranoid about pedaphelia, so any non-sexual ideals of raising men in a society that accepts nudity as a part of their education seems impossible.

Although I agree that Europeans (in general) have a more relaxed attitude towards nudity, it doesn't come from putting everyone together naked. It comes from a whole lifestyle and education. It's not just about nudity and it's only a part of a way of life and a way of thinking.

By the way, I have yet to see a "clothing optional" area in a swimming pool in France, Germany or Spain, so let's not overly generalize. Perhaps you have just visited "specialist areas? My experience only covers "family areas" ...

Also, although being topless is perfectly acceptable on the beach, being totally nude is not. You are expected to remain within areas that are designated as being naturist zones.

FCL, I am not sure if your are want to make this personal. My roots are European. Therefore I have traveledas as a single stud and married/ family male. Swam with my wife and boys. I will not boast of my travels. But FCL you may want to googlel " List of social nudity places in Europe. "

Tiergarten, the great park in the center of Berlin Some were nude, some were not. there were no signs delineating nude and textile places. Most of the of the saunas were nude are outside. People lounge naked in the sauna garden, in full view of the surrounding office buildings. I stayed in a hotel near the Tiergarten, the Sofitel Schweizerhof. When I was there the only showers were in the woman-only area . So they put up a sign, in English and German, 'Dear Guests, the showers are for men and women'. MY Most favorite palace is the CecilienHof, on a beautiful lake the HeiligenSee (Holy Lake). Just beyond the Cecilienhof (and an expensive hotel) on the north end of the lake, The two westward lawns are clothing optional, and the great majority of people were nude. Those people who wanted to wear bathing suits took their clothes off in public and put on their bathing suits, even on the textile beach. Mothers, fathers, and children, most of whom took off all of their clothes. There were as many people in the clothing optional areas as there were in the textile areas.

No; I'm not looking to make this personal. It's just that you make Europe sound as if it were a way it isn't. The places you refer to are not "average" swimming pools. You go there specifically. You made it sound in your earlier posts as if every swimming pool has a "clothes optional" area and that is far from the case.

Like I said, you frequent somewhat exclusive areas as opposed to "standard". These places are not the norm. Having said that, there are naturist areas everywhere and nobody thinks any harm of them but you go there deliberately, you don't just stumble over them.

I am not denying the existance of the places you refer to, just saying that they are not the norm.

For what it's worth, I too have travelled extensively in Europe (I have family and friends all over the place) and have lived in France for many years now.

The places I comment on are in the cities. Public parks not something I just stumbled on. There was no problem with me choosing to be naked. When those around me were dressed. Men and women did not have a issue changing in the public view. I never stated Europe were nudist. Only the men there have no issue with their penis. Do you agreee? I am not a nudist, therefore I do not look for only thse type of resorts.
Since you have lived in France for many years now. You may not understand the changes in the USA. That is not the norm.

I have also noticed in the locker room that the younger guys try to keep covered up with a towel while changing. I wander if this change can be related to the end of the draft in the US. I was never in the military, but when I grew up, we had common showers in the locker room at school.
