Why do I keep getting bacterial vaginosis?

An_208322 posted:
I was diagnosed with this about a month or two ago. My doctor prescribed me a cream to use for a week, metronidazole I believe was the name of it. I had no sexual contact during treatment or three days after.
Three days after treatment, when I had intercourse again, I noticed that it started to come back. I refilled the prescription and followed the same procedure as the first time with the only change being not having sex until a week after treatment was done.
My boyfriend and I decided to use condoms again (I am on birth control) and that seemed to help to a degree.
I recently had sex again, twice in a day, first time with a condom second time without and now I appear to be bothered again.
My Obgyn said originally it was probably because of my washing habits. She suggested using just water to wash but I couldn't bring myself to do that so I used a natural soap instead and washed less vigorously, which seemed to work.
I'm really stressed about this because I feel like I cannot have a normal sexual life. I have only had unprotected intercourse with the person I'm with now and the person that I was previously with we always used a condom...always. My current boyfriend's last sexual experience before me was 4-5 years ago and he is not havvng or hasn't had any type of complications that would indicate an STD. I don't know what to do anymore and just feel like giving up. Any advice or insights would be appreciated.

It may or may not be your washing habits, when you wash try to make sure your rinse off a few extra times because sometimes the left over soap can cause irritation which leaves the area more prone to infection. It could be bacteria he is passing on to you, so maybe he needs to clean better as well. BV is fairly common and there's a lot of beliefs on why women get it, it could be a new sex partner, washing habits, wearing irritating clothing (like thongs), if you douche, or even if you smoke.

BV is caused by a change in the pH levels, leaving the 'good' bacteria your body needs in much shorter supply, so the 'bad' bacteria take over...

Getting BV may have nothing at all to do with your sex life, even virgins can get it. A good way to rebuild the bacteria you need is to simply change some life habits, don't smoke, wash regularly (another good idea is directly after sex try to urinate and even try cleaning up with soap and warm water, it will take away a lot of the chance of bacteria coming from your sex life), don't wear thongs, eat healthy, and try to reduce your stress; avoid local irritants such as bubble baths, harsh soaps, feminine hygiene sprays, and deodorant tampons, avoid unnecessary contact with the rectum by wiping front to back after urination, avoid semen exposure (which changes the bacteria levels), try a vaginal moisturizer after intercourse and after your period.

Commonly most women who get BV, have it reoccur for about three or four months before they can get a handle on it. And unfortunately most doctors write BV off as a yeast infection so not a lot is known about it, but they have found that women who are anemic are more likely to get it, so maybe if you try to prevent it and have been treated a few times to no avail, try talking to your doctor about anemia or any other predispositions you may have.

There's a good website other than WebMD, it's called 'Prevention' and it has a LOT of information about every ailment you can think of, even BV... here's a link:

I hope this helps at least a little.

I keep getting it as well and I need answers! I have been on round after round of Flagyl and everytime I have sex it comes back. Some doctors say it's a pH issue, others have mentioned hormones or diabetes. I have never had this problem before, but it does make you want to give up.

I tried everything for three years to rid BV. I tracked the occurrences and certain enough it was happening on a monthly basis. I took a hormone test online after charting my symptoms. I suspected I had low estrogen. I asked my doctor they said they don't think that's the cause since I'm young but I insisted that I needed a birth control pill with slightly higher dose of estrogen since my last combination pill aggravated the symptoms. It's been three months and I've been cured within the first 3 days of it. It's a hormonal imbalance that throws off your PH and your bodies natural ability to fight off bad bacteria causing BV! Check what your hormonal balance is like! Sometimes the doctor won't know you need to chart your own body. I've tried everything apple cider vinegar, yogurt, hydrogen peroxide, borage, tea tree oil, eating differently, cleansing differently, acidopholis. Turn out the culprit was a hormonal imbalance all along.

Reading your input is SOOOO interesting to me since I've been dealing with a BV diagnosis for almost one year! I have an appt with a naturopath to discuss bioidentical hormone replacement because I believe my symptoms are also hormone related! You wouldn't believe the protocol I'm on now, douches, meds, herbs, supplements, the works... Talk about frustrated! Thanks again for your input. If you have any other info on this subject, I'd love to hear it!

Hello! Have you tried flagyl?

http://www.mvhmegainnercircle.com/Articles/flagyl-500-mg-drug-information.html

For recurrent bacterial vaginosis this drug should work. But you should take note of the habits that might have triggered the infeciton again. Drugs won't help you much if the rootcause of the problem cannot be solved.
