Hello everyone. I am really concerned about my hair loss. As the winters started i have been losing a good amount of hair. Every time i brush my hair the whole brush gets filled with hair and now my hair has thinned considerably in these past months. I have black hair (as my ethnicity is Indian) my hair are slightly wavy and they used to be thick and great. How can i stop my hair from falling so much and get them to be thick and wavy as they were? Do those anti hairfall shampoo's really work?

The summer before last, I had gotten a perm in my hair -- big mistake, it looked horrible. I was told the only way to get rid of it was to perm it again, but perm it straight. So i did. Which means I had 2 perms in 24 hours... horrible for my hair. ive had hair loss ever since. Like you, when i brush my hair, I feel like gobs of it come out. I loose hair in the shower, in the sink, brushing my hair, and even just playing with my hair during the day. I looked into those shampoos you mentioned. I asked my hair dresser about it and he said that those shampoos contain a product similar to womens rogain. And to never use it unless you plan on using it for the rest of your life. Apparently when you stop using the shampoo, your hair may fall out even more... but just in case you are willing to try it, I would go with Nioxin. I've heard great things about it. But I have no idea if my hair dresser was right or wrong...I hope this helps in some small way for you.
Good Luck!

Hello and Welcome Anon and nikh10309,

This is a very frustrating problem that may need to be evaluated by a dermatologist or your general health care provider since there could be several factors causing your hair loss.

We have a great Ask the Hair Care Specialists Series that may be helpful. Be sure to look at the right side of the page for previous titles that may also interest you. Let us know what you think about this series and if it is helpful.

Also, please see our Hair Loss Health Center for additional information.

Please keep us posted and hope you find answers soon,

If your hair is falling out due to the cold weather, you need to focus on moisturizing your hair, using a wide tooth comb, washing hair infrequently as possible, using detangler before combing. Hair loss shampoos are for persons whose hair is falling out due to hormonal imbalances which occur at the change of life. They work by blocking one of the hormones (DHT) known to cause hair loss. If that is not the cause, they will not work. Milagrobird

Milagrobird replied to nikh10309's response:
Your hair is falling out due to damage from the perm - not from a hormone imbalance which is what the shampoos are for. They block a hormone (DHT) associated with hair loss. Your hairdresser was not correct., Using the shampoo and then stopping, does not accelerate hair loss. Milagrobird

My hair has been falling out for years. For some reason it seemed to have stopped falling out; so I seem to think. . I usually brush it once a day and look at it once a day. I stopped worrying about my hair loss and focusing on healthy eating.. "Salt Off The Fries" (R).

Hair loss is the very common problem. Ayurvedic ways can help you out in this.

I had the same problem, where after every time I had a period, just chunks and chunk of my hair would fall out. It started happening every day instead of just after my period, so I went to my local salon and picked up a bottle of shampoo and conditioner called 'Redkin'. It works fantastically! My hair is shinier than before my hair loss, it's thicker, it's easier to brush through and style! And for those of you who color your hair (like me), it's color safe! It actually makes my color last longer--meaning it doesn't fade or lighten. Hope this helps!(:

I suddenly started having a problem with increased hair loss until I read somewhere that the problem could be related to iron-deficiency. Sure enough, that was it! My husband had gone on a low-cholesterol diet which had us eating lots of fish and pretty much dropping red meat from our diet. We both take the same multivitamin - but when I looked closely at the label, I realized there was no iron in it. I added an iron supplement to my diet and now my hairbush and shower drain are no longer hair-clogged!

Hello - My story is rather long but will try to make it short-since 2000 I noticed slight hair loss and saw a dermatologist who specialized in that area at the Univ of MN, and she didn't find anything significant. In 2008 I had (I know this ssounds wierd) areas on my head that got extremely sensitive (on top)and were also sometimes warm - then I started losing more hair. Don't know if it is neurological or not. Also had 3 surgeries to put stents in from 2008-2010; a cancer surgery on my nose and just had a major surgery on my shoulder. Please note my hair was falling out before the surgeries too. My hair continues to thin. I was told not to use any of the over the counter type products by my endicrinologist as it isn't good especially if you have heart issues. So I have no idea what I can do. Hair loss does not run in my family and I had so much hair you couldn't even see my part or my scalp at all. I would do anything to get it back and have tried just about everything, including the over the counter products. So am interested in any medical advise.
