I am a nurse and have noticed that my cuticles are really dry no matter how much lotion I put on. And now my thumbs have thickened skin under the fingernail. When I go to trim my nails I feel pressure on my thumbs and it hurts. It feels like you had just smashed your thumb in a door. The throbbing pain. I dont know what to do. Please help!
Mohiba K Tareen, MD responded:
Dear An,

As a healthcare professional, you are very prone to contact dermatitis, particularly on any aspect of the hand or nail unit.

You may need patch testing to determine if you had developed a contact allergy to nitrile, formaldehyde, etc.

It would be prudent to do it sooner rather than later given the severe pain that you are already experiencing.

I hope that helps
